My Japanese passport had a re-entry permit issued by ministry of manpower, which was due 16th of June, my ORD date. The attendant noticed this and asked me to go to the special counter to see the senior attendant.

The problem was she thought I was coming back to Singapore as a PR, so I needed to renew my re-entry permit. But later, I explained to her that since I renounced Singapore citizenship, I would come back to Singapore only as a foreigner. Once the misunderstanding, which was partly due my part, was cleared I was ready to go.

When I boarded the airplane that would bring me Melbourne, I remembered I sat beside this couple of Chinese men. From their accent, I was sure they were from mainland China. One of them was sitting at window seat, which was supposed to be mine. I thought it was not very mature of me to make a fuss out of it and ask for the seat. However as the plane took off, I regretted for not sitting by window to bid my farewell to Singapore, and to catch a glimpse of its night scenery for one last time.

Oh well, I thought to myself, I did enough of it a month ago when I left for Japan.

I could not sleep well for the rest of the night, thanks to someone sitting few rows behind me who was snoring his nose away. I wished I could stand up to him and smack his head. It was a crime to sleep in such bliss at expanse of one’s comfort.

I tried to kill my time by watching movies. When I was about to leave Singapore for Melbourne, I was doing shopping on that same day, buying things I thought would be necessary, which I should have done few days ago. If not for my mom’s nagging, I may not have started packing 3 days ago. But thanks to her, most of my packing was done, and with my last minute shopping of stationeries and stuffs, I am ready to go.

So my family has prepared last banquet for me before my departure, my mom prepared a sukiyaki. But I came home slightly late, so they started first before me. Nevertheless, I got to eat a tasty wagyu (Japanese beef), and savoured my mom’s dish for the last time in a long while.

On that same night I’m departing to Melbourne, my mom and my sister Mari were flying to Sydney as well. After a few days in Sydney they would come over to Melbourne to see me.

When we were about to depart, Brian came and fetched us. He generously drove us to Changi airport, saving us great deal of time and expense.

Once we reached airport we immediately checked in, and made our way to the entrance gates. Momo and Brian saw us out; poor Momo was to spend the rest of a week herself alone, we left her in good hands of Brian to send her back home.

My departure time was getting close, so I had to hurry. Before I made my way to my gate, my mom gave me additional pocket money, given from my ever generous uncle Shun-chan. I said goodbye to my mom and Mari, and as I left them I felt a surge of mixed feeling of excitement and anxiety, for I was about to fly to a foreign land, all on my own, spend the rest 3 years there…

久々の投稿

It’s been 2 months since I have left Singapore to come here, Melbourne to study in Monash University. So many things happened since the last time I ever posted on my blog. I think I shall slowly post up one by one about the events I think significant in my life. Not just to update my well being to my friends who bother to read this, but also to keep a chronicle of events for me to look back and remember.

16th June, My ORD (also my ROD)
The day I had been waiting for dearly, for past year and more, the day I am released from Singapore army. For 2 years 4 months, I have served Singapore Armed Forces as one of the National Serviceman.

I went through many things during my time in army, be it good or bad, exciting or boring, tough or easy. But no more, my service to Singapore has ended on this day.

During the afternoon, I came back to my camp to sign some papers that would officially confirm me as released from military organization. Usually a Singaporean guy would receive back his “Pink IC” (identification card) on this memorable day, but I was special. Since a year and a half ago, I had ceased to be a Singapore citizen, thus my IC was collected and destroyed by the Ministry of Immigration.

As I entered the administration office and received some briefings, I was told my testimonial by my officer was still pending, and I have to come back again on few days time to collect it. Damn it, my superior was not doing his stuff in time, as usual.

But anyway, as slowly made my way out of the camp, I looked around and savored its beautiful scenery for the last time. Unlike other army camps, SAFTI MI, my camp is a beautiful place, by design, for foreign officers and VIPs come to this place often.

It was a cloudy day, as though to follow my heart which was heavy with melancholy. It was suppose to be the day I over joy for the freedom returned back to me, but instead felt a little sense of lose and sadness that a chapter of my life has marked a period.

As I left the compound of SAFTI MI, I took few pictures of myself with the huge gates of SAFTI behind me, for me to keep it in remembrance.

I am BROWN

Your true color is Brown!

You're brown, a credible, stable color that's reminiscent of fine wood, rich leather, and wistful melancholy. Most likely, you're a logical, practical person ruled more by your head than your heart. With your inquisitive mind and insatiable curiosity, you're probably a great problem solver. And you always gather all of the facts before coming to a timely, informed decision. Easily intrigued, you're constantly finding new ways to challenge your mind, whether it's by reading the newspaper, playing a trivia game, or composing a piece of music. Brown is an impartial, neutral color, which means you tend to see the difference between fact and opinion easily and are open to many points of view. Trustworthy and steady, you really are a brown at heart.

<a href="http://web.tickle.com/rd/50650/color/index.jsp?testname=colorogt&resultid=F" I have wanted to apply for Biathlon participation, the one organised by SAFRA in March, but the registration closed just before the day I wanted to go apply. I really looked forward to this event and was planning on major cardio preparatory exercises througout the month of March, but now I feel I have lost a motive, feeling as though I am lost in midst of nowhere.

You ain't seeing me for next 10 days!!

Sometimes, things can go wrong in the wrong place at wrong time.

About a few weeks ago, a group of military police raided my unit, and many servicemen were caught for bringing in contraband items, me included. I had carelessly brought in digital camera in camp, and without any license of approval, so was caught red-handed. To let this happen on that particular day i brought in camera was, in Singlish term, damn suay I would say.

Due to the above mentioned crime I have commited, I was issued 10 days of Suspension of Leave, which is basically a confinement, starting from 1st of February. Which next day after I post this entry. So my friends won't be seeing much of me for the next few weeks.

2 things I can appreciate from this disaster is that, first I got my precious digital camera back. Second the SOL starts after Chinese New Year holiday.

The whole thing isn't a good thing at all, but at least I have to look at it on brighter side.

The Chinese New Year this year was a very quiet one for me compared to the past ones. Maybe because my mother and Mari went to Europe, leaving Momo and me at home and I didn't really invite anyone or visit anyone too. And I have no relative staying in Singapore, they are all either in Malaysia or Japan. So not much ang bao this year for me... and I getting too old to receive red packets.

Article regarding training your abdominal muscles

by Dr. Michael Colgan

Spread on my desk are 22 articles on abs, taken from recent issues of muscle and fitness magazines. Not one of them correctly identifies abdominal musculature and only two show any exercises that will improve abdominal power. It’s a sad commentary on the influence of bodybuilding, which focuses on improving only one of the abdominal muscles, the rectus abdominis, or six-pack. It’s the main abdominal muscle you can see (and admire in a mirror).

Under this influence, millions of misguided athletes endure endless hours at crunches, leg lifts, sit-ups, Roman chairs and weird and wishful ab machines. The net result is a minor increase in ab strength and a minimal reduction in the girth of the waistline. The only virtue of these shenanigans is that they keep people off the streets. You would get better abs chopping firewood.

If you want athletic power, don’t waste your time with conventional ab flapdoodle. Consider what an athlete needs in the mid-section. The abdominals and associated back muscles, called the multifidi, form the corset of your body’s core. In my book The New Power Program, I show how the core is your power center, through which power is transferred from the ground or other fixed point of leverage, up and down the body.1 Without a strong core, strong arms and legs cannot apply their power on the playing field.

Martial artists have known these things for centuries, but when bodybuilding developed in the 1930’s, its promoters were not listening, because they only wanted to develop muscles for sideshow. You see it in hundreds of bodybuilding programs. Abs are tagged onto other bodyparts, almost like an afterthought. Bodybuilders train from the outside in. Arms and legs, back and chest, then a little bit of abs, which is usually confined to the six-pack. If you want athletic power, train your body from the inside out: core first, then torso, then arms and legs.

Tight Gut

By tight I don’t mean a sucked-in gut, but rather a natural inward curve of the abdominal wall when the muscles are relaxed. Without this firm support, all your soft squashable organs flop around inside, dissipating your power. A loose gut is like a sealed rubber tube, loosely filled with little rubber balls. If I hit the top of the tube with a sledgehammer, it squashes and bulges. Very little of the power of the sledgehammer blow is transferred out the bottom. But if the tube is tightly filled and firm as a fence post, almost all the power is transferred. If you watched Michael Johnson break the 400 meters at the 1999 World Track and Field Championships in Seville, Spain, you know what I mean. He had no body sway. His power transfer through super-firm abs was so precise, he ran like a machine.

Not the Six-Pack

The first big surprise to many athletes at my seminars is to learn that the six-pack has nothing to do with a flat stomach or tight gut. The six-pack is a long flat muscle whose fibers run vertically down the body from the breastbone and fifth, sixth and seventh ribs, to the top of the pubic bone. The six sought after bumps poke out through a grid of flat tendons that run down the center and across the muscle at intervals.

The function of the six-pack is to flex the trunk so that your rib cage moves toward your pelvis. In doing so, it causes the stomach to bulge, never to become flatter. There’s no mechanism by which the six-pack can flatten your gut: its fibers run the wrong way.2 Haven’t you ever wondered why some bodybuilders have incredibly defined abs but, when relaxed, they stick out like a beer belly. That’s what ab training with sit-ups, crunches and Roman chairs will do for you.Still not convinced? Try this. Lie on your back and put one hand on your gut. Now do any type of crunch or sit-up you like. You will feel the stomach bulge immediately as the six-pack shortens and thickens.

Transversus Power

The main muscle that holds your gut flat and firm is the transversus, a thin sheet of muscle to the sides of the six-pack that joins into the connective tissue behind it. The transversus is your body’s natural corset. It’s fibers run across the gut, join into the back sheath of the six-pack and wrap around the sides of the body, attaching all along the rib cage, around the top of the pelvis and into the back muscles.

The transversus is the main muscle that pulls in your gut. Despite this clearly defined function, it is hardly ever trained in conventional ab routines, probably because you can’t see it in a mirror.

Internal Obliques: Stability

The transversus is assisted by the main stabilizers of the trunk, the internal oblique muscles. The diagonal fibers of the internal obliques provide a criss-cross layer of support over the horizontal transversus fibers. Unless you have strong core stabilizers, your upper body will sway like a sapling whenever you try to apply your power. Yet, because they are also invisible in a mirror, the internal obliques are rarely trained in bodybuilding routines. Athletic coaches, however, do realize their value, and use great side-to-side exercises with medicine balls to get at them.

A strong transversus and internal obliques also reduce pressure on the vertebral discs of your back by up to 50%. Especially so when you pull the gut up and in when lifting. Weight lifting belts and back supports used by truck drivers and warehouse staff reduce vertebral pressure by only 20 – 30%. Natural muscle wins every time.

External Obliques: Rotation

The final outer layer of muscle, which is visible, consists of the external obliques. Fibers of the external obliques run on the opposite diagonal to the internal obliques, providing a further criss-cross layer of support for the gut. They also rotate your trunk and bend it sideways, important functions for athletes. But the external obliques are shunned in conventional ab training, because bodybuilding exercises make their lower fibers show like love handles and make the waist wider.

Most idiotic of conventional ab routines are the hundreds of standing or bent over trunk twists done with a broom pole, or worse, a barbell on the shoulders, in vain attempts to make the external obliques smaller. The net result of this ballistic twisting is to stretch these muscles where they attach to the pelvis, and make them sag out even further.

You better get the external obliques trained right if you want athletic power. Electromyographic studies show that whenever you lift a weight in front of the body, or move to walk or run, the first muscle to fire is the transversus, followed by the internal obliques and the external obliques, and the lumbar multifidi muscles of the back. Only then does the rectus abdominis fire, and weakly at that.3,4 After all the abdominal muscles are firing and the trunk is stabilized, the prime movers of the movement begin to fire. If the transversus or internal or external obliques are weak, then all your movements are weak also.

Six-Pack Or Psoas

Once you have the transversus, internal obliques and external obliques under control, then you can consider the six-pack for its important athletic function in moving the breastbone towards the pubic bone. But even this simple movement is missed by most conventional ab training. Sit-ups, straight leg raises and Roman chairs, and lying or sitting ab machines that constrain the feet or legs, primarily exercise the psoas muscles which run from the top of the femur (thigh bone) through the pelvis to connect to the lumbar vertebrae. The psoas act to move the trunk towards the knees. Now you know why a lot of ab exercises give you a sore lower back.

The psoas become very strong whenever you arch your back to increase their leverage, and will override the six-pack, which is weak in any unsupported arched back position. Arched back means belly out, not the way you want to be for sport, or for life. Arched back with psoas under load also puts a shearing load on the lumbar spine, a big no-no for athletes.

Our rule is, bum in and round the back whenever you work your abs.

The Pelvic Floor

The floor of your pelvis, which supports your organs and intestines, is not bone, as many people seem to think. It is made of muscles. These muscles are pushed down by compression of the organs whenever you increase intra-abdominal pressure. So whenever you pull up on the transversus to tighten the abs, you should also pull up on the pelvic floor muscles to hold up your guts.

Martial arts have always recognized the importance of internal pelvic exercises to build a strong power center. Apart from these sports, however, even very fit athletes find it difficult to lift the pelvic floor, because it is neglected by all but the most sophisticated trainers. Because you can’t see it in a mirror, bodybuilding training ignores the pelvic floor entirely.

Here we are concerned only with the main supporting muscles, the sphincter ani, the levator ani and the coccygeus. Together with a mesh of connective tissues, they form a muscular hammock, slung across the gap in the pelvis. As you might expect, studies show that lifting weights, and other activity that increases intra-abdominal pressure, tries to push your guts out through the pelvic floor.5,6 The stronger you can make it to resist this pressure, the stronger your core. The way to do it is pull the anus up and in, an instant before you increase intra-abdominal pressure. That way the pelvic floor muscles are subjected to eccentric contraction (lengthening under load), the best way to strengthen them.Women are usually familiar with these muscles because of the Kegel exercises taught to expectant mothers. But many male athletes have little awareness of their pelvic floor. To improve awareness, practice this exercise during odd times, such as sitting in traffic. Pull up and in on the levator muscles, as if you are forcibly stopping your urine stream. Hold for five seconds. Relax five seconds. Now do five pumping lifts of one second each. Relax five seconds. Repeat the whole sequence six to eight times. Within a few weeks of daily practice you will be able to hold the pelvic floor up for at least a minute.

Strong Lower Back

The last component of a powerful core is strong lower back muscles. The transversus pulls heavily on the lower back whenever you tighten it. In the event of overload, it's usually the back that gives way. We tackle the problem with two exercises. First is the back extension roll-up on the back extension bench. Most folk you see using the back extension bench move up and down with a straight back, and even go into hyperextension — not a good idea. Instead, we teach athletes to roll up their back, vertebra by vertebra, from a tightly curled position to the horizontal.

Second is the reverse back extension, popularized by Louie Simmard, in which the legs hang down and are brought up to the horizontal. This exercise used to be a power secret of powerlifters and weightlifters, who constructed their own benches to do the job. Now I see commercial reverse extension benches being advertised everywhere. About time!

The Best Abdominal Exercises

For every ab exercise, center yourself first by pulling up and in on both the transversus and the pelvic floor. Retain this up and in posture even when breathing. Inhale on each concentric contraction and, just before each slow eccentric contraction, exhale forcibly by squeezing in more on the transversus and pelvic floor. Initially this action will be very strenuous. Without tightening the gut, you might do 50 reps of a movement such as hanging and kicking the knees to the chest. With power exercise you will be working to make 10 reps.

Because many athletes have weak abdominals, the series of five hanging exercises is listed from easy to hard. Initially you may be able to do only the first one or two. For some people even these will be too hard and you will have to start on floor ab exercises. As you progress to being able to do them all, you should reverse the order, doing the hardest abdominal exercises first. For all of the hanging exercises, it is important to keep the back rounded and the toes pointed forward, and curl the torso as you go up, in order to minimize the action of the psoas. A good test of ab strength is Exercise 3, straight leg raise from a dead hang. If you can’t do 10 reps, you need ab work real bad. Add two core exercises to each workout you do during the week. These are our Level 2 and Level 3 ab exercises. Floor ab exercises are Level 1. Level 4 ab and core exercises are not listed here. To learn all the levels you can attend one of our Power Program Camps or purchase the DVD sets which will become available during this year.

Exercise 1: Hanging Knee Kick

Hang on bar with back rounded and toes pointing forwards.

Pull up and in on transversus and pelvic floor.

Inhale.

Kick knees up to chin, keeping arms straight.

Hold and exhale, keeping transversus and pelvic floor up and in.

Slowly lower legs to start position.

Inhale.

Repeat for 6 – 8 reps.

Exercise 2: Hanging Half Leg Raise

Hang on bar with back rounded and toes pointing forwards.

Pull up and in on transversus and pelvic floor.

Inhale.

Raise straight legs up to horizontal, so they make a 90 degree angle with the body.

Keep arms straight.

Hold and exhale forcibly, keeping transversus and pelvic floor up and in.

Slowly lower straight legs to start position.

Inhale.

Repeat for 6 – 8 reps.

Exercise 3: Full Leg Raise

Hang on bar with back rounded and toes pointing forwards.

Pull up and in on transversus and pelvic floor.

Inhale.

Raise straight legs up to touch bar between hands, keeping arms straight.

Exhale forcibly, tightening transversus and pelvic floor.

Slowly lower legs to start position.

Inhale.

Repeat for 6 – 8 reps.

Exercise 4: Horizontal Scissors

Hang on bar with back rounded and toes pointing forwards.

Pull up and in on transversus and pelvic floor.

Inhale.

Raise straight legs up to touch bar between hands, keeping arms straight.Exhale.Keep transversus and pelvic floor tight.

Keep legs up.Scissor legs out to sides.

Inhale.

Bring legs in and exhale.

Repeat for 6 – 8 reps before slowly lowering legs to start position.

Exercise 5: Vertical Scissors

Hang on bar with back rounded and toes pointing forwards.

Pull up and in on transversus and pelvic floor.

Inhale.

Raise straight legs up to touch bar between hands.

Keep arms straight throughout.Exhale and tighten transversus and pelvic floor.

Keep one leg at bar level and lower other straight leg to the horizontal.

Inhale.

Reverse legs with a scissor movement while exhaling.

Repeat 6 – 8 reps before lowering straight legs slowly to start position.

Keep transversus and pelvic floor up and in throughout the exercise.

The rainy January

January is the month of rainy season, almost everyday it just rained at one point of time anywhere. The weather can be so cool I can afford to go out in long sleeves, or sleep at night with no air-con operating.

When the clock ticked 1200 midnight to announce the new year, I was so damn happy cos it marked the starting of the year filled with hope. It also made me highly aware of my ORD coming near.

In my camp MT Line, I am busy as ever, always chased to do many works, I am finding hard to organise myself to do things systematically. Furthermore tomorrow is my duty, so I won't get back home till saturday. Then the Sunday is also my duty day, so I'll hardly get any rest at all. For so long I never took off, and would like to take one badly but my female boss just refuses to approve my off. SAF really exploits the full out of me hah...

But I barely has 5 more months to go! And 3 more working months! OMG, can't wait!

But at least this month started quite ok, for there was a new year holiday and hari raya haji, allowing me to have some breaks from work. Get to go out with many of my old secondary friends, had fun playing games and badminton.

Hopefully, this is the year I can transit myself into a better person, and fly to Australia and open a new chapter of my life.

There goes December! There goes 2005!!

I never realised how fast the month of December has passed by. It seemed to have just breezed past me. Thanks to the annual stocktake in my unit, this month has been a very hectic one for me. But finally that stocktake is almost over, and their check on my store has been completed. Now I can sleep peacefully for first time in long while.

Many things happened though. My store IC has ORDed, so I took over him and effectively has become new Store In-Charge of MT company in SSU of SAFTI. So my hell has just begun! 4 more working months to go~, hold on tight!

And well, thats the end of 2005. When i looked back, I have spent half of the year in SSU MT line. Geez, was I there that long? Dunno how I had made it this far. Oh well, its just 4 more months only, i've already made pass the half way line. ORD is almost within my grasp!

I remember fondly of the days I spent in SCSC in the first half of the year. It is packed with many good memories, for I had a real slacking time those days. There were time I book in, go to intec centre and sleep while waiting for CD to get written, then book out at end of the day. Now I can only dream of it. I miss people there alot. But the good half of them have already ORDed, spending good time outside.

Many of my good friends have ORDed this december. If I had not retook my course during my poly time (which made me stayed there half more year), I could have ORDed right this month. Crap man, a huge regret that I can never forget about.

2005 was all about a time in army for me, good or bad. The coming year 2006 is filled with hope for me. I would clear my leaves around start of May, ORD falls on mid June, and I would be flying to Melbourne in July. My new life would start there. I am so excited thinking about it, I just can't wait to open the new chapter of my life. The only thing that restrains me now is army.

My friends say I shouldn't have gone into army at the first place, I agree and disagree with them, but now that I am in it already, I would just learn what I can learn from it, do my job good and get the hell out of it.

2006, here it comes!

166 more days to ORD...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gunghojapanese.blogspot.com/2005/12/there-goes-december-there-goes-2005.html' title='There goes December! First off, yesterday I was on leave and was happily enjoying my time with my friends and sisters when suddenly my camp mate informed I just made a major cock-up in my store check, and that my female warrant officer wants to see me regarding this (for a major scolding session obviously). I guess she's gonna spam a loads of extra duties on me. I dunno what will be left of me after she's through with me *sigh*

And the fact that today is my duty doesn't makes thing any better. It just means I will be busy the whole day, and stay overnight at my camp.

What a way to start December!

When will this madness end...

焦りと矛盾

Enjoying a rare opportunity of off-day. But I have this feeling of rush in me, like having an URGENT need to do something, something meaningful, spend my time meaningfully, not just sitting in front of computer all day, not just internet surfing all day, not DOTAing the whole day... C'mon, there should be something I can do! To change myself, to improve myself.

Since my reposting to SSU MT, I have learn to treasure my time. Hello September

Now that I am few minutes away from the 1st of September, I took sometime to look back at the month of August.

To me, the August has been pretty much a holiday month. It was indeed an enjoyable month, and a memorable one.

At the beginning of the month, I took a leave from army to go to Overseas Academic Link, an overseas studying agency, to meet with this head of art branch fom Monash University. After some talk, she granted me a place in Monash University. This has casted a bright light unto my then dark uncertain future, I suddenly felt I had a goal to work for. This was the most significant happening in the month, which somewhat set a course of my life.

Then in the following weekends, my family had a stay in Oriental Hotel, to see some fireworks. The stay in the hotel was very luxurious, letting me temorarily forget all about stressful army life.

On the following Friday, I had a wisdom tooth extraction, which granted me 5 days MC. Though 2 days of MC were wasted by weekends, I still enjoyed my MC on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, I tried my first attempt of airmailing a stuff to overseas, which was a birthday present to my friend studying in Australia. I was told it would take the mail 14 days to reach him, but it turned out it only took like less than 5 days to reach there.

Immediately after I came from my MC, I was spammed with 2 duties within a week. It was stressful, yeah, but I made it.

Next week was my storeman course, which was held in Sembawang Camp, and it lasted for 1 week. I had to say the course was damn slack, boring as hell, but still I enjoyed the time there. Anywhere outside my MT line is a good place. There were so many breaks, such as machine break, canteen break, smoking break, sleeping break, you name it. There was a gym in the block I was training in, it had a nice sets of free weights and new machines. I made full use of it, using
it during a break time after lunch. And another good thing about the course was we usually could book out early.

I was sad to go back to MT line after my course, but on the first day I went back, I was made to join this heritage tour, where together with other SSU people, we toured around the places like Little India and Chinatown, getting to know more about the cultures and heritage of Indian and Chinese. At the end of it, we falled out at Chinatown by around 4pm. Wonderful.

So then, August was really a blissful month for me. Perhaps for me to get ready for future sufferings I have to endure till my ORD.

Looking at my duty forecast for September already makes me feel depressed. 6 duties in a month, never before I had such a number of duties in a month. Maybe I had in SCSC but those duties were nothing compared to the in MT line. It is so easy to cock-up in this duty, every duty specialists must be on their balls to keep themselves from getting extras duties.

Sigh, another 7 more months for me to go before I can start to clear my leaves. I must stay strong to endure through this. My watch already long ago has ticked past 12, signalling its the first day of September. 287 more days to ORD....

I can see a storm coming from the horizon, the inky black clouds with streaks of lightning flashes, the mere look of it fills one with dread and awe; now I am ready, to run through the maelstrom of thunder and rain, and keep running, to my promised land of freedom and glory.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gunghojapanese.blogspot.com/2005/09/goodbye-august-hello-september.html' title='Goodbye August. Early in the morning me and my Malay buddy, Redzwan headed our way there from SAFTI MI on GP car, driven by our most courteous 2SG Raj.

As far as I can tell from today, the course itself is very slack, with alot of "machine" breaks, alot of time to sleep. Most of the lecturers are also nice, they like to talk cock alot while teaching us.

Whenever we have to go for a lunch, we have to march like we did during BMT; but it's ok, I like marching.

Among the 61 students attending the course, there are only 2 corporals, that is me and one more guy called Yeo. The rest are still just privates, with one or two lance corporals. So being the highest rank there, Yeo and me were appointed as course I/C and 2I/C. I expected to be told to do alot of shit works, but it was alright, Yeo did most of the works.

We were dismissed by 1730hrs, and being stay-out personals, we headed our way back home.

Natsu Matsuri 2005

On the evening of 20th of August, Saturday there was a Natsu Matsutri, Japanese summer festival held in Changi Japanese School.

I went there to meet up with my sister who went there earlier than me with her friends. Upon reaching the japanese school, I had to wait in a damn long queue to buy coupons to have an entry into into the school compound where the festival was held. In the end, the entry coupon was sold out, so the rest of people in queue were allowed to just go in, but without special coupons like Main Dish coupon.

The festival was held in the school track and field. At the middle of the soccer field, a huge stage platform was built (refer to photo below), and people could go onstage to dance or play Japanese taiko drum.

It was almost just like school open house, except this one was in Japanese style.

All around the track, there were stores selling foods and goods. I had to wait in yet another long queue just to get my hands on food to eat. To buy foods like japanese curry or soba noodle, I need to pay by Main Dish coupon, but unfortunately it was sold out, so I have to make myself content by eating tit bits, grrrrr....

The place of full of people wearing Japanese summer outfit called yukata. Alot of Japanese were there (duh), but in fact there were as many local people was well, if not more. Even the locals came in yukata. I'll have to mention that there were many, many pretty girls, both local and Japanese.

Later, I joined my sister near the stage, together with other people surrounding it to dance the Bon Odori, which is the traditional Japanese festival dance. It was quite fun dancing in circle as one, and the dance itself was simple and easy to remember.

Once the festival was over, together with my sis and her friend, I took a bus to Tanah Merah MRT station, from where we grabbed a cab to go back to my house.

Me in Changi Jap School

natsu matsuri
Originally uploaded by Adam Koyama.
A photo of me taken in Changi Japanese school, some time after the summer festival was over.

A peaceful Saturday morning

Just came back from duty in SAFTI. It feels good to be home.

Dammit, I hate my duty!! During office hour it is hectic, alto of things to do. Issuing keys to driver, issuing fuel cards, taking account of all vehicles (there alot in MT line), doing stuff and shits for your superiors, wake up early in the morning to make sure early detail drivers are there... The more shits there are for you to do, the more chance of you getting cock-ups, getting extra duties. So far I haven't get any extras yet, hopefully it will stay so till my ORD.

When I was in SCSC, I could surf net after office hours, so I could spill my ranting ino my blog in real time. Now I have to wait till I get home to go online and enter my rantings and ravings.

Well at least this morning, there was no early morning driver's detail, I could have a good sleep and wake up abit later (at 6.30am that is). Once I woke up, I changed into civilians and packed my bags, and once the next duty personal came in to take over, I wasted no time and quickly left the camp.

And now, home sweet home!!

299 more days to ORD.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I got to watched this movie together with my friend's brother, I'm gonna put my thoughts on it.

First off, I have to say I didn't wholeheartedly enjoy this show, at least for the 80% of the time. It was so far off the course from the original novel written by Roald Dahl, not only the storyline but how they project the character of the Willy Wonka (not only the look, but more importantly the character itself).

The movie has managed to made the kids look as despicable as the novel has intended them to be, but there was an utter difference in how Willy Wonka reacted to them. In novel, despite the dreadful behaviour by the children, Wonka stayed well reserved and kept his cool, but yet not losing an ounce of his sense of humour.

In the movie, Wonka's character bear no resemblence to that of Willy Wonka in the novel; when he interacted with the rotten children, he displayed lame reactions (especially to TeeVee), at times he looked more childish than any of the kids right there.

Watching the film, I admit I had a discomfort watching Wonka's lame actions and the movie's execution. It started when the kids were asked to enter the Chocolate Factory, and Wonka was supposedly show up surrounded by muppets and showered by pyrotechnics Disneyland-style. Instead the fireworks burned and melt the plastic muppets into hidious abomination, and Wonka was cheering at such show like a retard, and that created an unusual atmosphere.

The lame jokes throughout the show weren't helping the show much either, the only one that managed to make crowds laugh was when Wonka exclaimed "I need to find heir (hair)".

I only enjoyed the 1st few songs and dance showed by Oompa-Loompas. It was rather interesting that they had distinguished each performance under different genre; first performance was a jazz, second was kinda techno, third was a hip-hop, and the last one was a rock. But the last one was lame to the extreme, I almost couldn't bear to watch it.

As I continued on to watch the film, frustration was accumulating inside me, thinking this movie will be remembered as the lamest remake ever.

But then at the last part, the show had a strange twist. When Wonka had offered Charlie his factory, Charlie rejected it for his family. And later they would visit Wonka's father together, and ulitmately decided to move the whole house and family into Chocolate factory to live together. This last execution brought warmth into my heart, making me forget the frustrations I felt before. Then I realized all the dark atmosphere shown throughout the film were intended to make the last more inspiring. I was rather impressed by the craftiness of the director.

I would rate this movie 7/10. Really, the last part saved the whole movie.

A warning for game addict

Second gamer dies after massive bingeVictim played for 32 hours non-stop

Just days after the first 'internet overdose', another addict has died after a marathon games binge. The 27 year-old Taiwanese man collapsed after playing computer games for 32 hours non-stop.

Police confirmed that Lien Wen-cheng started playing at the cyber cafe in Fengyuan in central Taiwan at 10.30pm on Thursday.

At 7am on Saturday, a staff member found the man on the floor of the cafe's toilet foaming at the mouth and bleeding from the nose. "They rushed him to hospital but he was already dead," local police said. A police spokesman stated that doctors believe Wen-cheng died from exhaustion, having remained in the same position for too long. The death highlights the danger of such intensive game-playing.

Less than 10 days ago, a 24 year-old South Korean man died at an internet cafe in Kwangju, 260km outside Seoul, after playing continuously for 86 hours.Psychologist Peter Watson explained that playing games over prolonged periods without sleep places the body under considerable stress.

"Depending on the game, the brain is receiving [the impression] that it is constantly under attack," he said. "We would not expect hardened soldiers to cope with a 32-hour fire fight, and yet some people think they can play these games constantly for long periods of time."

Haha, so my fellow Dota players please take care.

hanabi

<div style="float: right; We sang many Jap songs, but some English songs as well. I tried Rick Astley, but just can't sing well at all. Damn, got to practice more.

After 2 hours of karaokeing, we went over to Heeren to take neoprints. Gawd, those neoprints are expensive! $8 per session, wtf. But holycrap, these neoprints machines have turned so advanced now, some have sofa in it, with auto replacing multi-colour background.

After taking shots, the user can manually design their photos using the touch screen behind the machine. My sister Momo was so pro with it, the end result can be seen here.

Trip to CMPB

This morning I went over to CMPB to get my 11B replaced (coz' I'm such a dork to even forget my password, and my card is such a defect it can't even be read by card reader). It seemed I was the first customer there, when I reached there all the clerks seemed to be free. One of them attended to me, but one female clerk looked so familiar to me. She seemed to look like someone I've seen from Roon's blog, so I asked her whether she know Roon.

The very mentioning of Roon's name brought surprise from everyone there. She is such a famous celebrity here. What have she done?

Well, actually she used to be their colleagues, and she just leaves a lasting impression wherever she goes.

Anyway, back to my 11B story. Due to recent migration of their computer system to new computer terminals, their system seemed have some cock-ups (huh, same thing at my workplace), and my card can't be diagnosed. So my consultant told me I got to wait till next week and apply IDMS for replacement of my card. Tough luck...

Best Soldier of the year 2005

Originally uploaded by rooxalgia.
Jonathan Huang, the self acclaimed best soldier of the year from SCSC.

On his plundered RP helmet, he bears extra large 3 stripes that was given to him by 3SG Kai Loon for enduring a gruelling training in TCO (Talking Cock Office).

On his chest he wears a Best Cookery Badge, for his ever lasting contributions to canteen in SAFTI MI, just by buying and eating at every tea breaks.

And he proudly holds the national flag, the reminder to all around him his impregnable loyalty to his country.

Another week coming to end

'tis Friday, and I have taken half day leave!

Damn, since I was posted to SSU, I've started to make full use of my leave. But at the 1st of June, I was transfered to this other unit called SSU (Service and Support Unit). It is also inside SAFTI, and its objective is it provide all the servicing the training units in SAFTI needs.

I would get more into detail next time. For now I shall just record down the summary of my past week.

Monday - Doing fatigue works at War Game Centre at Pasir Lebar Camp. Stayed till like 11pm. Thankfully one of the majors was kind enough to send Eugene and me near our homes.

Tuesday - I spent my time in college settling my clearance forms and packing my stuff to prepare for my transfer. I went to WGC briefly to help out some works.

Wednesday - My first day in SSU. I went around looking for Chief Clerk and AO, but was made to wait since SSU people were away having exercise. They interviewed me later in the morning. After lunch, I was sent to estate branch temporarily to help them out, for they were busy as hell and any help was greatly appreciated.

Thursday - I was sent to MT branch, which is where I was to settle down for the rest of my NS life (maybe?). Get interviewed by OC, 2IC and SSG there. I got to know with guys there as well. All friendly and nice to get along with.

Friday - The day past rather fast. There was a games session in the evening, which is held within SSU every Friday. I met Jonathan at the stadium setting up waterpoints for students and DS playing frisbees. Later at night, I met up with Matthew and Rison to play DOTA at E-games.

A panty.... to protect your girl???

Well, this is for guys who are overly jealous for your girl...

http://forgetmenotpanties.contagiousmedia.org/about.html

Reflecting upon my past week

This week started with me doing duty at my workplace, during a Vesak day, whereas by right I should be slacking at home but was obliged to serve the country.

During Tuesday and Wednesday, I felt very tired and couldn't find any vitality to work. I don't know why, but all I wanted to do these days was just sit down in a comfortable chair in a corner of my office and slumber away.

Thursday was another tiring day, for it is the starting of wargame, everyone in TCO, EPO and Network department have to shift most of the computers in college to wargame centre in Pasir Lebar Camp. The process is darn tiring, but thank goodness we have more manpower now, or we could have died of fatigue.

I took a day off on Friday, a rest I well deserve for doing duty on public holiday.

On Thursday night and Friday night, I had consecutive DOTA marathon with Matthew and our colleagues in our workplace. It was fun, but very money consuming as well. On Friday night itself I spent $18 playing in E-games. I'd have to fast from playing DOTA for some time, or my purse would be empty of money.

As for my physical training for this week, I had an intensive work out with Matthew on Friday afternoon at Delta Sports Complex. I focused on my pectorals, biceps and abdominal muscles. I plan to further train this coming week more regularly, to achieve a more massive but defined mucho body.

A guy's blog entry helped to arrest his murderer

A very weird story...

A doomed Queens man's chilling computer entry led cops to a suspect who allegedly robbed and killed the victim and his sister to finance a return to China, police said yesterday.Jin Lin, 23, was charged with first-degree murder yesterday in the bloody slayings of Sharon and Simon Ng in their Kew Gardens Hills apartment Thursday, officials said.

Cops zeroed in on Lin, who once dated the woman, because Ng typed a journal entry into his computer fingering his sister's ex-boyfriend as the suspect, police said.He wrote that he was wondering why Lin was there and wished he would leave," said Police Officer Jennara Everleth, an NYPD spokeswomanCops said that Ng, 19, let Lin into the second-floor apartment in the late afternoon when Lin asked if he could wait for the 21-year-old Sharon.

Sgt. Michael Breidenbach, head of the 107th Precinct detective squad, said the entry turned Lin's alibi upside down. That puts him in the apartment," said Breidenbach, adding that investigators got Lin to confess after confronting him with the entry.Lin told cops he wanted to rob her to help him buy a plane ticket back to Hong Kong, law enforcement sources said.Lin - who was picked up at his Flushing home on Friday - told cops that he set upon Simon Ng after failing to find any money in Sharon's bedroom.

Lin tied Simon Ng up and stabbed him repeatedly in the chest with a butcher knife, cops said.It was not clear how much time passed before Sharon Ng came home at 9:30 p.m. Cops said Lin pounced on her as she entered the home and stabbed her repeatedly in the neck.

In the minutes after the attack, Sharon Ng's current boyfriend called and she managed to tell him to get help. She died about an hour later at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens.

A cousin of the slain siblings - their own parents returned to Hong Kong six months ago - remained in shock over the killings yesterday."It's unbelievable that it was one single guy!" said Sam Cheung, 24. "He took two lives. He's so useless and yet make so much noise at home, irritating the fuck outta me.

He doesn't have to make noise in particular though, just by looking at him, just standing by him, just sensing his presence in my house rubs on my nerve.

Well, today is Sunday, and this parasite decided to stay at home instead of going out, and damn, this really made me feel pissed. I had to vent my anger on something, anything, so I decided to go for a jog to release some gas. Went for 2.4km run at my neighbourhood track.

That helped alright, I went home and found him sleeping on my bed. I let him, well at least I have a soft spot on my heart and prefer to avoid conflict whenever possible.

But wadda hell, he always dissapoints me for showing him kindness. After he woke up, he bitched about me not drying the bathroom after I took shower. I striked back by saying don't be such a sissy, shut up and use the toilet, can't believe he grew up in kang pong. Then an intense quarrell ensued.

He went on as to say he would get my bed out of my room. The same bed he was sleeping on just now. Fucking Fuck!! What a nerve he has. The gym we went was Delta Sports Complex, the place I used to go with my pals Baohua and Samuel. That was a long time ago, and working out at that place today gave me a sense of nostalgia.

I didn't see the familiar body builders who frequents there except for one, the female bodybuilder me and BH had called 'Demon Lady'. She seemed to have gained more mass than last time and just as defined as before. Today she wasn't wearing glasses, contact lenses probably, and it actually made her look attractive.

Uh no, what am I saying, seems I'm getting too desperate, given an opportunity she can easily rape my ass with her demonic strength. For the whole time she was demoralizing Matthew, for she made him look puny and weak. But it did sparked a competitive drive in me, motivating me to work out harder for it is a shame losing out to lady in lifting weights.

For an hour inside the gym, we worked out intensely till we could take no more. We left the gym to go to town, which is the common term for Orchard Road.

As planned, we went to cineleisure to play in the E-games. The waiting list was long, so we decided to have early dinner first and chill out at cafe, eyeing at cute girls walking by.

Once the seat was ready we made our move and started playing the Defense of the Ancients, aka DOTA. Andrew joined us few hours later. We had a good fun playing, but my dear buddy Matthew enjoyed himself talking to girls selling games at the place, he was so engrossed in conversation with her, he neglected to support me in the game. Uh well, who can blame him, how on earth can a hormonoly charged adolesent man can ignore a sweet girl and concentrate on his game. If not he would be a hopeless computer geek.

We played till 11pm, and I was charged $13. Holy shit, so much... I've been spending alot on playing DOTA recently, think I should fast playing LAN and save up some money.

The joy of Jogging

These days I feel I am in unhealthy lack of exercise. Due to my work as NSF, sometimes I have to stay back to do my work, and it can take away my time to do my personal training. Once in awhile I would do own physical training in my office, but it can't be effective enough to due to lack of space and proper equipment.

Today since I got back home at without staying back, I had some liberty to go for a jog while waiting for my mother to cook dinner.

I decided to jog around my neighbourhood where usually my mom and I like to go for a walk. The air was moist and cool, thanks to the rainy weather in the evening. It felt very refreshing running in this cool weather.

Maybe owing to the ideal temperature, I was able to run fast and maintain the high pace throughout my jog. I just felt unusually energized during my run, I felt as though I was running like a horse. It's as though someone had replaced my biological engine from 1200cc to 2400cc power, I felt I could just keep on running. After I reached my house, I felt I could run more, but it was almost time for dinner. I wish I had this vitality during my 2.4km run in IPPT, so I could have gotten slightly better timing. It is my ambition to get gold for my IPPT in near future.

My jog today was so enjoyable and refreshing, I wish to have another jogging session again soon (as soon as my leg recovers from muscle aches and whenever my schedule allows).

Just watched the movie with my sis and mom

This evening I watched a Japanese movie in cineleisure, with my mother and Momo.

The title of the movie was 'Last Quarter'. My sis had been very thrilled to watch this one, because one of the main actor was Hyde, the vocal of the Japanese rock band 'Larc~en~ciel', who is the favourite among my two sisters. Momo also told me that this movie was based on story of the manga drawn by Ai Yazawa.

We were 15 mins late for the movie, for we left the house late, but it thankfully we didn't lose so much as to lose track of the storyline.

At the first part of the movie, I found the show quite lame and there were various parts that looked so stupid the audience laughed even though it wasn't mend to be funny. There were times I fought the urge to shout "Damn, this is a crap!" and walk out from the theatre. Other movies as bad as this I can think of were 'Andromeda' ( the one where they show Speed and Da Pump members). Ju-On was almost as bad, but at least it was scary enough to remain out of my list of 'the worst movie ever'.

The main character played by Hyde was a cool guy with visual make-up of a rock star, and guess what the character's name was Adam. That is actually one of my many alias. The moment Adam said his name, I could hear a muffled laughter from my mother and sister's side. They must have found a huge gap between Adam in the movie and me funny.

As the movie progressed, I found that movie was not a horror movie but actually just a love and romance. At the middle part, the plot had a twist that managed to keep me interested to watch it till the last.

I would rate this movie 4/10, this might be a good story in manga, but doesn't really have any worth as a movie.

Some muthafucka thinking he's tough

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/4465167/detail.html?subid=22100410&qs=1;bp=t

A man accused of stomping a family of geese to death over the weekend was in an Attleboro courtroom Monday.

Sanders is accused of stomping to death five goslings and their mother at the Texas Instruments campus in Attleboro. Police said the industrial engineer was angry that the mother goose hissed at him as he walked across the lawn.

"It was fairly gruesome scene. The deceased goslings were spread over an area of approximately a football field," said Keane. "The goose raised up and hissed at him. He became startled, he tried to frighten the goose away, and when he did, he slipped and fell."
After slipping on goose droppings, Sanders allegedly kicked the goose and jumped up and down on the goslings until they were all dead.

The injured mother goose was captured and later euthanized.

A photographer saw the mother goose after the attack.
"(Police) showed me the broken leg, it was compound fracture -- the bone was sticking out. The whole back leg looked like it was ripped apart. I said, 'This is an extensive injury, and I don’t know how any animal could recover from that kind of injury,'" said photographer Mark Stockwell.

Dammit!! My sun lotion didn't seem to do its job well. Among the guys that have went to Sentosa, I was the reddest of them all.

Whenever I wear or remove my shirt I can't do it without moaning in pain. My face skin is so sensitive, I can't rub it when I wash my face. Such an inconvenience. Due to the burn, my face is oily as a used cooking pan, and I can't wash my face properly. Hopefully my face won't come up with pimples...

Having fun at Sentosa

Today I went to Sentosa with my NS colleagues. The sun was glaring, the sky was blue, the beach was full of bikini babes. What more can I ask for?

Seriously, the sentosa beach today had so many eye candies for my eyes to lick upon, I'll probably die of diabetics the next day.

Me and my friends did have fun by playing beach volley, throwing frisby and swimming in the lagoon. It's been such a long time I had so enjoyable outings with my friends. I was looking forward to see Roon bringing her Golden Retriever to the beach, but in the end she never showed up. But I saw a girl bringing Siberian Husky around, and got to chat with her abit *chuckles*

But I got to stress that the sun today was F***ING HOT. Despite I applied sun lotion, my skin wasn't spared from the horrible burn, it turned all red and my friends were making fun of me, saying I looked like boiled lobster or some baboon ass or blah blah.... And even now I still can feel my skin scorching hot. I wonder how I'm gonna survive next few days.

We left Sentosa around 4pm, had a late lunch at Harbour Point. After then we decided to go to town to play few games of DOTA.

One of my colleagues Winston told me he's gonna own my ass, and I was like "ok, bring it on. I'm gonna own you instead". But it turned out he improved so much than I expectd him to be, he gave me a hell of a tough time. I got to put my hands down to him, he's a damn good Dota player now.

At the last game we played against some strangers, but since their team was pro and our team was isolated and full of newbies, we were trashed up and down, left and right till we couldn't remember our parents' names. We had enough fun for the day and decided to go home.

Well, that was a hell of way to spend Labour Day. Hopefully we can have another occasion like this one.

China, Taiwan opposition mend ties

CNN - BEIJING, China (AP) -- Taiwan's opposition leader and Chinese President Hu Jintao promised on Friday to work together to end hostilities between Taipei and Beijing, during the highest-level meeting between the two sides since they split amid civil war nearly six decades ago.In a ceremony televised live in China and Taiwan, Hu and Nationalist Party Chairman Lien Chan smiled and shook hands in the Great Hall of the People, the seat of China's legislature in central Beijing.

More on cnn.com

Bwahahahahahaha! *laugh at Lien Chan*

Loser!

Chinese people might view this peace talk as a step closer to unification of Taiwan and China. But I view this differently.

The talk between the Lien Chan and Hu Jintao only means that the Chinese Nationalist admitted defeat to Chinese Communist.60 years ago, Nationalist and Communist had internal war in China, but Nationalist was defeated and they took refuge to Taiwan, where they gained control and licked their wounds.

Their leader then Chiang Kai Shek sworn his Nationalist party will one day unify China with force. And Chinese Nationalist had been holding on to that ambition for decades since. But now, Nationalist is starting to lose their power in Taiwan, with their ruling party seat taken over by Democratic party, with the presence of Taiwan independence supporter gaining popularity. This current situation must have forced Nationalist leader Lien Chan to look upon his brethren in China for help. Now that his position in Taiwan is getting hopeless, he had no choice but to wave white flag to his party's old foes.So he went to China.

I can almost imagine what Lien could've said.

"Sorry, I lost hope in conquering China. You win, we lose. So let's put the past behind us, and unify Taiwan and China together. So please put me as provincial head of Taiwan, okay?"

Some people might welcome this move by Lien, thinking this would bring peace to the region.

Yeah, right. A "peace" under oppression of Communist China.

It makes me wonder what makes people think Nationalist party is the party that legitimately represent Taiwan? It was originally a group foreign to Taiwan, and since their forceful gain of strength they had been oppressively ruling Taiwan till recently. Most of the Nationalist members are mainland Chinese who ran away from mainland during the Communist rules, with dream that one day they can return to their homeland.

Well, good for them now that Lien had peaceful talks with Communist leader. They can pack their bags and leave Taiwan and spend the rest of their days in China.

But why can't they just leave Taiwan alone to claim independance?

Spending duty at my workplace...

Surely nobody's going to disagree with me that having duty on weekend suck big time. When you are a National Serviceman conscripted into Singapore Army, you just have no rights to say no to this things (unless you think of ways to work your way around the system).

In combat units, the one doing guard duty will be obliged to do a tiring task of prowling around his camp like guard dogs. Thankfully, the duty of my workplace is not that demanding. The most you have to do is just locking/unlocking the camp, and walking to cookhouse to grab food. Other than that, we can just sit at air-conned room surfing internet.

But still it sucks just for the fact you can't go to town, you can't spend your time with family, and do things you can only do at home.

During weekend duty, there are only two things duty personals usually do.
1)Sleeping
2)Surfing net

It's not a bad thing, but I decided to make my time more worthwhile.

Today my duty partner was 3SG Kai Loon. He's a cool guy and is into kickboxing nowadays. So before lunch, he and I had a good session of kickboxing training. He was crazy enough to wrap Staff Sg Larry's tennis racket with other people's towels to turn it into mini punching bag. We walked around the place half naked, like as though the camp was our house.

Then around 3.30pm, when sun was shining bright and hot, I laid a training mattress on third floor veranda and spend an hour sun bathing. I took a bath after that and chilled out at admin office. It felt damn refreshing.

Before dinner, I had some chin-up exercise. I did high number of sets with low repetitions, eventually doing total of 40 reps in the end. My forearms and lats muscle were completely wacked out. Due to that, I have to type these out with shaky fingers.

Other than that, I got not much else to write about. Maybe when I'm bored I'll post something...

My 1st post in my 1st blog

Watching my friends enjoying themselves creating their blog, I decided to give it a go.

Please note my blog may at times contain something very political, racist, erotic or anything you might find evil and unholy.
